Couples Therapy
In your relationships, are you:
Feeling stuck or confused about how to connect?
Having arguments over "the silliest things?"
Having a hard time repairing after a disagreement?
Frequently falling into angry silences or withdrawing from one another?
Struggling to recover from an affair?
Having a hard time talking about a major issue without hurt feelings and misunderstandings?
Feeling disconnected and sad, or like you are "walking on eggshells?"
Relationship Focused Therapy can help you:
Identify what helps you feel connected, respected, and understood
Have a strong, steady connection
Feel like you can disagree while still feeling loved and respected
Trust each other again
Decide if you both want to put in the work to continue the relationship or respectfully end it
Be able to "reach each other" again
Heal from old hurts
Manage stress as a team
When fear, anger, or uncertainty overwhelms a relationship, sometimes negative emotional patterns are formed that can prevent love and connection, leaving couples in great distress even if they love each other and want to be together. Fortunately, with help and guidance, many of these patterns can be repaired!
Couples therapy is an unique type of treatment that requires specialized training, as the work is not only about the individuals. The relationship also becomes a client in its own right and requires deliberate care and intervention. I do not believe in “blaming” couples therapy nor in focusing on one partner as “the problem” in the relationship. I focus on how each partner’s responses affect one another. In couples therapy, I am directive and focus on the strengths of the couple, while helping them unlock painful patterns and increasing empathy and support for one another.
As a couples therapist, I believe strongly that relationships can heal and improve, even if there has been much damage or pain. I have training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) which is a highly researched and effective model of therapy designed to heal underlying attachment issues and promote long term change instead of just simple problem solving. I also have training in Gottman Therapy, which is a structured and comprehensive model to help couples improve communication, resolve conflict, and increase empathy and intimacy.
I have experience treating many types of relationships (consensual non-monogamy, long distance, etc) and am welcoming to all gender and sexuality expressions and identities. If you would like to find out more about my approach in these areas, please contact me for a free 15 minute phone consultation.
